The debate about the direct benefits of using social networking in education is still ongoing. However, some of these online social networking sites, or SNS, have early reputations that have long preceded their potentials. Facebook, Friendster, and MySpace are some of the examples of such networking sites that caused a shame for themselves. Technology per se does not deserve this stigma.

However, as we see these lines blur, it is still interesting to know that a change is taking place. This change shows how social networking sites could be utilized in order to ease students’ lives.

Some members who post confidential and specific personal details (like addresses and phone numbers), publish inappropriate pictures, statements or other information usually become victims of online predators.

There are students who are reprimanded by their school administrators for posting self-incriminating and intolerable pictures or information. These actions violate different school policies and codes of conduct. However, school administrators do not directly monitor the activities of their students in online networking sites. If their students’ accounts clearly violate imposed school policies and is consequently brought to their attention, they may start a more thorough investigation of the matter.

Social Networking in Education – Collaboration Rather Than Conflict

The challenge of maximizing the potentials of SNS in the lives of students lies on how to incorporate such sites with academic training. Initially, academic institutions refused to accept the use of social networking sites for influencing their students. However, despite of these disadvantages, it is still evident that the internet is a very powerful educational tool. A virtual school ground where students can constantly meet and chat will bring learning to them without having to leave the comfort of their homes.

Lately, these same school institutions had to recognize SNS with a fresh eye. Using technology in order to socialize students may become an efficient method if implemented in the education system. An alliance, not a collision, should be formed between the online activities of students and important academic goals. The challenge that academic institutions must face is to control the power of SNS and to integrate it with existing traditional academic methods.

It is impossible to directly incorporate SNS within the classrooms – SNS can be primarily used for socialization purposes. However, these tools have developed into very sophisticated tools which can be practical for students. Educators should not deliberately ignore this. With increasing optimism, this goal could be achieved through the following ways:

* Paying attention and looking into social networking sites – School administrator must not deny the usefulness of networking activities without actually understanding how it really operates. Investigating these sites will show how it becomes popular among their students.

* Employing the educational worth of social networking activities – Educators may start considering ways on how to extend various classroom activities into the internet. Online communities sustain themselves by giving users different ways to interact. By devising projects and assignments that students can fulfill through SNS, they’ll make the most out of it.

By maximizing the potentials of SNS to create a positive atmosphere for learning, the role of online technology for students would be realized. The use of SNS plays an integral part in improving the learning process of students, and is not merely a distraction.
